56. A North Suburban Library System Symposium – "Open Source Software And Libraries,"
will be presented Friday, September 21, 2001, at NSLS, 200 W. Dundee Road, Wheeling, IL 60090.

What Should You Know About Open Source Software?

If you ever used the Internet, you have used open source software.

The concept of open source-software programs that belong to everyone—shares similarity to
the value of libraries as a collection of shared resources.

This symposium is designed to provide a general overview of open source software as well as open source resources specifically developed for libraries. By bringing together some of the creators and adopters of open source software, you will have a chance to talk to people who are involved in both sides of this endeavor. You will learn what is required to make the software available and what it takes to adopt a program.

Open Source Software in Libraries
Keynote Address
The State of Open Source in Libraries
David Bretthauer

What is open source software? How is it comparable with the culture and values of libraries and librarianship? How can libraries encourage its development, and what are the challenges of doing so? This presentation will focus on these issues, the state of open source software today, as well as library-specific software.

MyLibrary@NCState
Eric Lease Morgan

This presentation describes and demonstrates MyLibrary@NCState, a user-centered, customizable interface to a library’s collection of information resources. The system integrates principles of librarianship with globally networked computing resources creating a dynamic, customer-driven front-end to any library’s set of materials. It supports a framework for libraries to provide enhanced access to local and remote sets of date, information, and knowledge.

Jake at Notre Dame: Customization on a Budget
Donna Stevenson

Jake at Notre Dame – Jake is an open-source reference tool for identifying content within aggregators of electronic journals. In this talk, she discusses how they have used Jake at the University Libraries of Notre Dame, both the positives and the problems, and how I ended up writing my own piece of open-source software to customize Jake to the needs of our patrons.

The Avanti Project
Peter Schlumpf

The Avanti project is an effort to create a simple, platform independent and implementation neutral open source integrated library system. Many library systems were developed to suit the needs of a particular library or type of library. This resulted in a rigid architecture that straightjackets a library into the limitations of the system. Avanti overcomes such limitations by taking an abstract design approach, distilling the problem of library automation to basic principles and emphasizing simplicity. The result is an integrated library system that is small, powerful and highly configurable. This presentation will provide an overview of Avanti, a live demonstration of some of its present capabilities, and outline its future development.

57. Special Libraries Association – Illinois Chapter presents a Professional Development Workshop Tuesday, October 2, 2001, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., titled "Intranet Taxonomies and Metadata: Creating Them, Using Them." Putting content on the Internet with a flexible, effective, and easy-to-use interface requires a strong metadata set and accompanying taxonomy or taxonomies. Metadata and taxonomies are the two major components that allow for quick, easy navigation and excellent search results, and when they are linked to well-formed data, create the basis of successful sites. Several standards are in the process of being set, and many techniques have evolved to help achieve these goals. Learn about the Dublin Core Metadata, the INDECS data dictionary, the EPICS project, the latest BISAC initiatives, the RDF from W3C, and other metadata projects that can be used in your own Internet or intranet development projects. Taxonomy management deals with the core concern of content developers and disseminators, which is how to quickly convey the meaning of a record or document so that it can be found precisely and accurately. Ambiguity is the ever-present enemy of clarity. Thesaurus (taxonomy) design ;and control provide tools and techniques for disambiguation. The presenter, Marjorie Hlava, a designer and developer of databases for over 20 years, will discuss techniques for building and managing vocabularies and metadata and defines the various types of word control formats. Hlava will demonstrate an XML RDF solution for text management as an example of how these new standards can work together for an effective outcome. (For more on the speaker, refer to the reverse side of #57).
